Development of educational ideas around the lifewide concept

The idea of lifewideness and its application to higher education grew out of the R&D work of the Surrey Centre for Excellence in Professional Training and Education (SCEPTrE). The initial context for development related to our exploration of the idea of learning for a complex world. The idea of a lifewide curriculum was born in March 2008. The first step was to create a picture and a simple description of what it might mean. This initial paper was used to promote discussion within the SCEPTrE Team and with a few people who I used as a sounding board. I incorporated the idea into presentations and workshops on 'Experiential Learning' and 'Enhancing Creativity in Higher Education' and spoke about them at several events in universities other than my own.  In May I prepared a concept paper for the WACE conference on Work Integrated Learning in Sydney and in June I presented the idea, in the context of enhancing learners' creative development at a conference in Brisbane. The ideas were developed throughout 2009 and 10 mainly through background papers for conference presentations but it was only late 2010 and early 2011 that I then tried to bring the ideas together in a book.
